Move over, ice cream man, there is a flashy, new red bike in town, and it’s here to help make a healthier Fresno State. It’s called Wellness on Wheels, and it’s a new effort by Fresno State’s Student Health and Counseling Center to mobilize wellness on every corner of campus.
“We recognized that although our Wellness Wednesdays are extremely popular among students, that we could also meet them where they are at,” said Stephanie Annett, registered dietitian at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
“The Wellness on Wheels bike helps us reach students who may not otherwise visit the central parts of campus. Simply put, they go to class and then leave campus afterwards. We want to reach those students, too.”
The Wellness on Wheels (WOW) bike’s first-ever pop-up location was at the Student Health and Counseling Center on March 11, when Annett and other staff and student assistants handed out free healthy snacks like oranges, bananas and apples, as well as cold, bottled water. Other items such as protein bars, granola bars and travel-sized sunscreen, deodorant and personal care products were also handed out.
In total, Annett and other staff have held seven pop-ups serving nearly 500 students at various locations across campus.
More pop-up locations are scheduled for August :
- Monday, Aug. 11, 8 to 10 a.m. near the Industrial Technology building.
- Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Student Health and Counseling Center welcome booth at the Resnick Student Union lawn.
