Fresno State civil engineering students competed in the 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers Mid-Pacific Student Symposium at San Jose State University, April 10 through 12, and placed in three of four competition categories.
This includes second place in the transportation category, third place in steel bridge and third place in sustainable solutions, with an additional team receiving an individual category award of second place in geowall.
Known as MidPac, the three-day competition brought together civil engineering students from 12 universities across Northern California to participate in a variety of civil engineering competitions meant to showcase their skills in building and designing in concrete canoe, steel bridge, sustainable solutions, surveying and other areas. A total of 34 students from Fresno State competed across four different competitions.
Students began preparing for the competition at the beginning of the fall semester under the guidance of Dr. Jorge Pesantez, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering and faculty adviser for the Fresno State American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter. The teams received materials donations and fabrication support from Liberty Metals, Fast Trak Metal Fabrication and Mid Valley Distributors.
