Bringing theatre to life for children across the Valley

Senior Kaylee Myers helped bring this spring’s production of Lemonade Stand, written by Lojo Simon, to life through colorful and culturally informed set design.

To accurately and respectfully reflect the Armenian, Hmong and Oaxacan characters featured in the play, Myers and the production consulted with cultural experts and designed functional set pieces that supported the story and touring production.

The hands-on learning experience involved collaborating with director and assistant professor Nicola Olsen, along with the cast and crew, to plan, build, paint and demonstrate how the moving components of the set would work together during performances.

The production traveled to multiple schools throughout the semester as part of Fresno State’s Theatre for Young Audiences program. Near the end of its run, Myers joined community members for a free public performance during Vintage Days in April.

The Theatre for Young Audiences is a student touring theatre program that has visited more than 40 schools annually and reached thousands of students across the San Joaquin Valley for more than 50 years.
