Whole Vine Festival to honor Fresno State programs

Fresno State will host the fourth annual Whole Vine Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, on the lawn northeast of the Science II Building (near the corner of Barstow and Woodrow avenues).

The free event offers grape and raisin samples, food trucks, music, art, kids’ activities and educational elements that spotlight the San Joaquin Valley’s role as a national leader in table, raisin and wine grape production.

The Fresno State Winery will offer wine tastings alongside several other wineries. The event will also honor the Fresno State Viticulture and Enology Department, and campus winery and winemaker Tom Montgomery at 10:30 a.m.

The department is one of the nation’s leading programs in the science of grape growing and winemaking and was started by Dr. Vincent E. Petrucci in 1948. The Fresno State Winery became the nation’s first bonded winery on a college campus in 1997 and releases at least 15 vintages each year under the guidance of Montgomery, an alumnus of the program.

The event’s primary sponsors include American Vineyard magazine, California Table Grape Commission, Farm Credit, Industry Standard, Raisin Administrative Committee and the Spencer family.
