Research at Fresno State: How K-Pop became Korea’s soft power

Dr. Jenny Banh, professor of anthropology and coordinator of the Asian American Studies Program at Fresno State, enjoys discussing the financial and cultural impact of K-pop worldwide in her classes, articles and research.

Netflix’s “K-Pop Demon Hunters” animated movie is the latest top-rated cultural export from the South Korean government, part of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) movement.

Other top-streaming songs like ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY have followed the lead of Korean dramas and beauty products, which were successfully exported in prior decades and helped the country rebuild its economy after years of war and devastation.

In a recent video, Banh shares insight into the Korean pride behind these modern, artistic forms enjoyed by fans across the world.

Did you know? The “Anime, Graphic Novel, K-Pop and Asian Cultural Studies” class (ASAM 175) is one of almost 30 Asian-related classes that Fresno State students can enroll in as part of the new Asian American and Asian Studies bachelor’s of science degree introduced in 2025.
