Contemporary Dance Ensemble explores chaos, joy and resistance

Fresno State’s University Theatre and the Contemporary Dance Ensemble present “Finger In Your Eye” under the artistic direction of Kenneth Balint. Featuring compelling choreography by Balint, student choreographer-in-residence Juana Cardenas and guest artist Waeli Wang, the concert presents six repertory-length works that surge with urgency and imagination.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 and 14 and Feb. 17 through 21, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the John W. Wright Theatre on campus. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for Fresno State faculty, staff, alumni and military, $5 for Fresno State students and $10 for all other students. This production contains mature content and themes. Children under 5 will not be admitted.

Through striking physicality and evocative movement, the performances explore themes of growth and transformation, power and injustice, resistance and resilience, and deeply personal narratives. Audiences will journey through moments of chaos and control, surreal and dreamlike worlds and flashes of joy and celebration – creating an immersive, thought-provoking experience that resonates long after the final bow.

The works are performed by The Contemporary Dance Ensemble dancers Rachel Berny, Juana Cardenas, Dana Cole, Alex Galaviz, Jacob Gasca, Vanessa Hinojosa, Chloe Ito-Haro, Alicia Matus, Sophia McAlister, Axel Monsisvais Castro, Jason Pak, Landry Reynolds, Phoebe Rex, Sarah Taylor, Churtong Vang, Seng Vang, Heidi Villa, Jennie Whetstone, Phengkee Yang, Xavier Williams and Esther Xiong.

Doors open 30 minutes prior to the curtain. Latecomers will be seated at the house manager’s discretion. No refunds or exchanges. The box office is open Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. and one hour before each performance, and accepts cash, check and credit card.
