The Fresno State Winery won four medals at the West Coast College and University Wine Festival held June 14 at Allan Hancock University in Santa Maria.
Winery student assistants from the Fresno State Viticulture and Enology Department crafted the wines, which included a gold medal for their 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, a silver medal for their Grenache Rosé and bronze medals for their 2024 Muscat Canelli and 2021 Zinfandel.
Among the judges’ comments, they complimented the Sauvignon Blanc’s skillfully crafted, well-balanced and buttery flavor and the Grenache’s well-crafted profile and gorgeous color.
Other college wineries from California that competed included Allan Hancock, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Las Positas College and Napa Valley College, and Yavapai College from Arizona.
The event was open to the public and gave university and college viticulture, enology and winery programs a chance to showcase their resources, students, faculty and staff.
The campus winery is the nation’s oldest and largest collegiate winery, and its academic programs date back to the arrival of legendary faculty member Dr. Vincent E. Petrucci in 1948. Since his retirement in 1993, it has continued to build on its internationally known reputation for hands-on teaching, training, research and industry collaboration.
