In Memory: Dolores Huerta

Fresno State joins the Central Valley and communities across the nation in mourning the passing of Dolores Huerta, a pioneering civil rights leader whose courage, determination and lifelong commitment to justice changed countless lives.

As a co-founder of the United Farm Workers, Dolores gave voice to generations of farmworkers and their families. She understood the strength of this Valley and the people who call it home. Her unwavering belief in the dignity of every person, the power of education and the importance of standing up for others reflects so much of what we value at Fresno State.

Throughout her life, Dolores visited Fresno State on multiple occasions, sharing her experiences and inspiring students and members of our campus community. She was also recognized by the California State University with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from CSU Northridge in 2002, honoring her extraordinary contributions to civil rights and social justice.

In 2020, Fresno State planted a ginkgo tree in our campus Peace Garden in her honor -a tree whose leaves turn bright golden in autumn. Today, that tree holds even greater meaning. Its roots remind us of her deep connection to the Central Valley, while its continued growth symbolizes the generations who will carry her legacy forward.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones and all whose lives were touched by her remarkable leadership.

¡Sí, se puede!
