Harriet Tubman descendant joins Fresno State alumna for film screening

The Title IV-E Child Welfare program at Fresno State will host a screening of “Living Harriet Tubman” from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Fresno State Library’s Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery.

The film chronicles the journey of Fresno State social work alumna Nancy Whittle, an educator and social worker who has portrayed famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman at Civil War reenactments for more than three decades. Through Whittle’s story, the film honors Tubman’s legacy, from her escape from slavery to her service in the Union Army as a nurse, scout and spy during the Civil War.

Following the screening at 10:30 a.m., Whittle will join co-director Brandon Tauszik and Ernestine Wyatt, Tubman’s great-great-great-grandniece, for a panel discussion. Wyatt promotes and preserves Tubman’s legacy through public speaking and educational programs.

The event is free and open to the public with advance registration recommended. For more information or accommodations, contact Dr. Cheryl Whittle, coordinator of the Title IV-E Child Welfare Program and sister-in-law of Nancy Whittle, at cherylw@mail.fresnostate.edu.
