The Fresno State Dairy Science Club helped organize a fall milk drive that raised almost $3,000 to support the delivery of over 1,000 gallons of milk to the Fresno State Amendola Family Student Cupboard and Central California Food Bank Thursday, Dec. 18.
Milk and donations were collected by the club online and at the Gibson Farm Market earlier in the semester.
The Intercollegiate Give a Gallon Challenge was tied to a state-wide effort with other state agricultural universities, and Fresno State had the highest totals for the third straight year. Real California Milk organized the event and donated 100 gallons to each university. Producers Dairy will help organize the milk delivery.
Other universities that competed included Cal Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo, Chico State and Modesto Junior College. Combined, the drive led to 1,702 gallons of milk that will be donated.
The campus Dairy Science Club is a student-operated organization that provides professional development and community outreach opportunities in the state’s top milk-producing region.
Nationally, California is the leading producer of milk, butter, ice cream and nonfat dry milk. The California Milk Advisory Board, which is supervised by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is funded by the state’s dairies.
