Washington Monthly ranked Fresno State No. 11 among all public and private schools nationwide, and No. 3 among universities in the West, for helping middle- and working-class students get ahead economically and become good citizens. 

The Washington D.C.-based independent media organization published its 2026 Best Colleges for your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars ranking on Aug. 31, ranking 1,504 colleges and universities based on their contribution to the public good in four categories: access, affordability, outcomes and promoting public service.

Washington Monthly considers itself the alternative college ranking, rewarding colleges for how much they help ordinary students get ahead in life instead of for exclusivity, prestige and wealth.

Fresno State is one of four California State University campuses in the top 15 along with two Ivy League institutions, Duke University, MIT and Johns Hopkins University. It is also the only university from the Pac-12 Conference in the top 30. 

The university also ranked No. 12 in the Best Hispanic-Serving Colleges ranking, in which Washington Monthly collaborated with Excelencia in Education to rank colleges and universities that are best serving the growing Hispanic student population. Fresno State earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification in 2024 for its work in improving outcomes for Hispanic students. 

Here are some ways Fresno State showed its commitment to affordability, outcome and impact on the community:

• Fresno State annually contributes more than 1 million hours of service to the community. During the 2025-26 academic year, students, faculty and staff completed 1.39 million service hours, generating nearly $60 million in community impact. 
• The university opened its first major housing project in 50 years adding 228 apartment-style beds to its housing inventory. The affordable student housing project includes apartments for students with children. 
• Fresno State expanded its Bulldog Bound guaranteed admissions program for high school students to include transfer students from community colleges. 

In June, Fresno State received a 5-star rating, the highest possible on Money’s 2026 Best Colleges list.
