See which award-winning wines will be featured at campus tasting event

The Fresno State Winery will showcase several recent award-winning wines at its Fresno State Wine Club shipment pick-up party and wine tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 19, at the campus winery (2360 E Barstow Ave.).

The event is open to the public. Guests can RSVP for the event, which will feature this shipment’s 2022 Tempranillo and Zinfandel, 2024 Syrah Rosé and 2025 Vermentino vintages and other favorites.

A special wine club alumni vintner add-on is available for purchase, featuring the 2025 Muscat of Alexandria and Pomegranate Sparkling Wines crafted at Kings River Winery by alumnus Matt Rule.

Membership in the wine club is free and offers a 20% discount on three shipments of four bottles throughout the year.

The winery celebrated recent gold medals at the San Joaquin Wine Competition for its student-crafted 2023 Alicante Bouschet and Pinot Noir wines. Its 2024 vintages of Grenache Rosé and Muscat Canelli Late Harvest also added silver medals.

At the Orange County Wine Competition this spring, its 2024 Chardonnay claimed a gold medal. Three other wines claimed silver awards — the 2024 Muscat Canelli and Sauvignon Blanc and the 2023 Alicante Bouschet.

The Fresno State Winery’s recently-bottled 2025 Vermentino also claimed a silver medal at the fourth-annual West Coast College and University Wine Festival, held at Allan Hancock College. Two other Fresno State wines also received silver medals, the 2023 Alicante Bouchet and 2024 Chardonnay.

“The West Coast College and University Wine Festival was a great opportunity to showcase the work being done by our students and connect with peers from across the wine industry,” said Kevin Smith, Viticulture and Enology Department lecturer. “Having our wines earn recognition in a competition that included entries from both collegiate programs and commercial wineries speaks to the quality of our educational experience and the dedication our students bring to the craft of winemaking.”

Fresno State wines are crafted by students as they prepare for winemaking careers that can take them around the world. Many of their wines, and additional research and industry outreach projects by department faculty, students and partners will also be featured at the free, Grape Day event, on Aug. 4.

“Every bottle produced at the Fresno State Winery represents an invaluable learning opportunity for our students,” said Sonet Van Zyl, Department of Viticulture and Enology chair. “The recognition these wines have received in respected competitions demonstrates the quality of our program and the talent of our students. We look forward to welcoming wine club members and guests to experience these award-winning wines while learning more about the education, research and industry partnerships that make Fresno State a leader in wine education.”
