Fresno State’s Recreation 88 gives students a hands-on introduction to rock climbing and outdoor adventure.
Granite cliffs. Towering sequoias. In Recreation 88, learning happens on the rock.
This one-unit course introduces students to rock climbing while taking advantage of Fresno State’s prime location near Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks. Many students try the sport for the first time — and discover new confidence along the way.
Instructor Ryan Soares explains how the course helps students push through stress and anxiety, build resilience and form a supportive community. For some, the experience is so impactful it inspires a change in major or a path into the climbing industry.
