School of Art, Design and Art History celebrates name change with ‘Gifted’ exhibition

In celebration of changing its name from the Department of Art, Design and Art History to the School of Art, Design and Art History, the school is hosting the special exhibition, “Gifted: The Japanese Art of Kyōsai, Kyōsui and Kyōtei from the Richard E. Dyck Collection” from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Phebe Conley Art Gallery and Courtyard.

Active from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, artist Kawanabe Kyōsai, his daughter Kawanabe Kyōsui and his most accomplished student Mano Kyōtei, worked and lived together as Japan transitioned to modernity. They were trained in ukiyo-e, a popular woodblock technique, and Kanō-school painting traditions. The Dyck collection represents one of the largest known collections of works by Kyōtei in the world. Throughout the gallery, bonsai trees by award-winning artist Masaaki Shibata and others complement the artwork’s themes.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Clark Bonsai Museum, the School of Art, Design and Art History and the Center for Creativity and the Arts.
