University mourns the passing of agricultural leader John C. Harris

Dr. John C. Harris, a visionary leader in California agriculture and a champion of thoroughbred racing who generously gave to schools and programs across Fresno State, passed away on July 3. He was 81.

“As a true champion of the Central Valley, John elevated our region to national and international prominence, showcasing its strength, innovation and potential. We are deeply grateful that John Harris has long been a friend of Fresno State — his support expanded past agriculture and into the realms of business, education and other areas of student success.”

Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval

“As Fresno State proudly stands among the many beneficiaries of Mr. Harris’s heartfelt generosity, countless generations of students will be elevated by his profound legacy — one that continues to inspire and empower the next generation of Central Valley leaders who will carry forward his vision and dedication to excellence that empowers our communities.”

A lifelong resident of Fresno County, Harris attended local schools before venturing out of the area to earn his degree in agricultural production from the University of California, Davis, in 1965. He also served in the United States Army.

Harris developed and grew the farm that his father, Jack Harris, started in 1937 on the west side of the Valley into one of the most prominent and diversified agribusinesses in the state. He championed innovation, quality and sustainability. Harris Farms produced cotton, grain, fruits, vegetables, nuts and wine grapes.

For nearly 50 years, Harris continued his father’s legacy, growing the Harris Ranch Beef Company and delivering superior quality grain-fed beef worldwide. He sold the beef operations to Central Valley Meat Holding Company in 2018.

Harris was a nationally recognized figure in thoroughbred horse racing, having bred and raced many champions, including California Chrome, winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He served as a mentor and ambassador in horse racing for years, holding positions with the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the California Horse Racing Board and the Thoroughbred Owners of California.

At Fresno State, Harris supported the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, the Bulldog Foundation, the Maddy Institute and the President’s Circle of Excellence. He also served on the board of directors for the Maddy Institute.

“John Harris will leave an enduring legacy in the Jordan College through the establishment of the John Harris Fellows Program. This program will provide students with meaningful hands-on training, foster the development of essential skills and inspire leadership and innovation. His commitment to agriculture will continue to shape the careers of countless emerging leaders and strengthen the advancements they bring to the agricultural sciences for generations to come.”

Dr. Rolston St. Hilaire, dean of the Jordan College

In recognition of his extraordinary impact to the university, Harris received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the California State University and Fresno State in 2019. He was also the 2022 honoree at the Ag One Community Salute which honors individuals and families for their service to California agriculture, food industries and the community.
