Engineering design challenge returns for 29th year on Nov. 1

The Lyles College of Engineering at Fresno State will host the 29th annual Central California Engineering Design Challenge from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at Fresno State’s South Gym. Nearly 700 students from Fresno State, Clovis Community College, Fresno Community College, Madera Community College, Reedley College and Lemoore College will compete in the challenge, which is free to view and open to the public.

With the theme “optimizing mass public transit” in mind, teams of three to six students each will have one and a half hours to design, construct and operate a scaled prototype device designed to meet the public transit needs of congested megacities. The winning teams will be invited to present their projects at the Lyles College of Engineering’s Projects Day in spring 2026.

All students are currently enrolled in an introduction to engineering course at their respective colleges and universities and have expressed interest in pursuing an engineering degree. Elements from the design challenge have been woven into their engineering coursework throughout the semester, which culminates with them competing in the design challenge. The goal of the challenge is to teach the students about the engineering design process and how to work effectively as a team.
