Professional development workshops open to the community

Fresno State’s Division of Continuing and Global Education announced its lineup of professional development workshops for fall 2025. These workshops will provide Fresno State students and community members with opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge across a variety of fields.

Designed to cater to diverse interests and career goals, the workshops cover grant writing and management, medical interpreting, project management and beer brewing basics — offering valuable insights and practical skills for those seeking to advance their current careers or explore new opportunities.

The fall workshop schedule includes:

  • Grant Writing and Management — Learn the fundamentals of grant writing and management, including proposal development, budgeting and project planning. Sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 via Zoom and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 and Sept. 6 at the Kremen Education Building (Room 140). Instructor Dr. Daniel J. Griffin brings over 35 years of experience in writing, editing and scoring grants, as well as managing and evaluating numerous grant programs.
  • Introduction to Medical Interpreting — This asynchronous course, held Sept. 8 through Nov. 2, will provide bilingual participants with training in medical interpreting techniques, theory, concepts, medical terminology, professional development, health care interpreter standards, cultural awareness and interpreting modes, with a focus on consecutive interpreting. Instructor Dr. Soraya Alamdari is a nationally certified health care interpreter who has been teaching in the interpreting and translation field since 2008.
  • Project Management for the Workplace — Develop essential project management skills, including planning, execution, monitoring and control. This in-person course will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 6 through 9 at the Kremen Education Building (Room 140). Instructor Olustee “Steve” Smith, disadvantaged business enterprise small business coordinator for the City of Fresno, has over 15 years of project management experience in energy and education.
  • Brew U – Brewing Basics — Brew U is a two-week course covering the fundamentals of brewing beer, from ingredient selection to fermentation techniques. Classes will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Oct. 7 through 23, at the Kremen Education Building (Room 140) and off-site at three breweries. Instructor Chris Asa, an award-winning homebrewer with more than a decade of experience, is co-founder of the Tallahassee Beer Society and has helped cultivate a thriving craft and homebrewing community in the Florida Panhandle.
