State leaders gather for Maddy Institute reception honoring Fresno State alumnus

The Maddy Institute will host its 11th annual Sacramento Reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the California Museum, bringing together state leaders, policymakers, alumni and supporters of The Maddy Institute who are committed to inspiring public leadership for the Central Valley.

This signature fundraising event supports the Institute’s leadership programs, including the Bob Beverly Sacramento Legislative Internship Program, which provides San Joaquin Valley students with paid internships at the State Capitol. Inspired by Senator Ken Maddy’s values of collaboration and commitment to public service, these hands-on experiences prepare the next generation of leaders to serve their communities in the Valley and beyond.

“We are proud to celebrate not only the legacy of Senator Maddy, Senator Beverly and the leaders who have supported our mission, but also the bright future of public leadership in the Valley,” said Blake Zante, executive director of The Maddy Institute. “This event is an opportunity to honor those who have shaped our history and invest in those who will shape our future.”

In honor of its 25th anniversary, The Maddy Institute will present its Legacy Award to the Honorable Chuck Poochigian in recognition of his leadership in establishing the institute and his lifelong dedication to public service.

“Senator Ken Maddy had a well-earned reputation as a very bright, principled leader who was keenly focused on crafting good public policy. His engaging personality and leadership style facilitated finding common ground among disparate interests over his long, productive career.” said Chuck Poochigian, former California State Assemblymember and Associate Judge of the California 5th District Court of Appeal.

“The Maddy Institute provides young people interested in public policy and service the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience consistent with the legacy of integrity, problem-solving skills and dynamism reflected in the career of the Institute’s namesake, the Honorable Kenneth L. Maddy.”

The evening will also include the attendance of the Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr., Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, UC Merced Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Congressman Adam Gray, Senator Shannon Grove, Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, Assemblymember David Tangipa, former Assemblymember Rusty Areias and former Assemblymember Mike Villines.

Silver sponsors of the event include the Association of California Water Agencies, California Farm Bureau, CSU Bakersfield, Nielsen Merksamer, Nossaman LLP, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Rural County Representatives of California, UC Merced and Youth Save Democracy. Bronze sponsors are California Advocates, California Chamber of Commerce, Merced College, Precision Civil Engineering, Sagaser, Watkins & Wieland PC, Swing Strategies, The Wonderful Company and Western States Petroleum Association.

Sponsorship levels range from $1,000 to $10,000, offering an opportunity for organizations to showcase their support for future Valley leaders at this signature event.
