The public is invited to a presentation by Chapman University history faculty member Dr. Stefan Cristian Ionescu from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the Library, Room 3212. Ionescu will discuss European Jewish resistance methods against the Nazis during the Holocaust, and how it has been depicted in historiography and popular culture.
The study of these resistance methods has evolved from an initial overemphasis on armed technique to a more complex approach, which also includes non-military responses such as rescue, intra-communitarian help, legal and spiritual approaches.
Ionescu is the Leon and Sophie Weinstein Associate Professor in Holocaust History and the Associate Director of the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education.
He is the author of two books, “Jewish Resistance to ‘Romanianization,’ 1940-1944” and “Justice and Restitution in Post-Nazi Romania: Rebuilding Jewish Lives and Communities, 1944-1950,” as well as book chapters and academic journal articles.
His academic interests also cover Jewish history, European modern history, transitional justice and minority studies. He earned his doctoral degree in Holocaust and genocide studies at Clark University.
The event is organized by the Fresno State Jewish Studies Program. Contact Program Coordinator and Professor Dr. Jill Fields for more information (jfields@mail.fresnostate.edu).
